I completed my doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD) at CalSouthern University, while simultaneously earning my certification in hypnotherapy from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute. I’m an American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress diplomat, a member of ATSA (Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers), the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, and the National Guild of Hypnotists.
I also practice EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming), Time Line Therapy, and EFT (Emotion Free Therapy), combining these modalities with hypnosis and talk therapy for the best results in each individual client.
During my years as a professional stand-up comedian, I was (like many people) extremely skeptical about hypnosis, rolling my eyes when I had to share the stage with a hypnotist. While working on my doctorate in clinical psychology, however, my perspective shifted. Now I know that hypnosis is a powerful, naturally occurring state. It’s not “Hypno Magic,” but a psychoscience that works like magic!
In addition to earning a doctorate in psychology from Southern California University of Professional Studies, I have a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance, and my background as an opera singer and stand-up comedian adds heart and humor to the healing. A popular keynote speaker I insist, “Change does not have to hurt!”
I believe every child’s birthright is that his or her sexuality will blossom in its own time. Sexual abuse thwarts that right. With all humility, I wish there had been someone like me around when I needed help. We, fortunately, live in terribly exciting times when this issue is ‘out of the closet’ and help is readily available.
I can’t remember a time when music wasn’t a part of my life; indeed, I believe I’m a connoisseur of beautiful sounds. And there is nothing on earth more exquisite than the sound of children’s laughter. We can heal and find that happy, loving child within us again … that child who simply wants to celebrate the joy of living.
Originally from Atlanta, where I trained as an opera singer, therapist and clinical hypnotist, I moved to New York City in 1985 to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. I worked all over the country and abroad, and moved to L.A. in 1994 when I heard that Hollywood needed more blondes…
I experienced an epiphany when I began volunteer work for Children of the Night, a shelter for sexually abused teens in Los Angeles. It changed my life and prompted me to return to school at the age of 44 to pursue a doctorate in psychology and to specialize in the prevention and healing of child sexual abuse. I went on to write the nonfiction YOU-TURN: CHANGING DIRECTION IN MIDLIFE, to inspire others that it is never too late to reinvent.
I’m in private practice in West Los Angeles, where I treat over 100 issues with hypnosis and am also a primary therapist at Seasons Recovery Center, a luxury rehab facility in Malibu, California. I am also a busy public speaker, and a frequent media guest, having appeared on Anderson Cooper, The Doctors, and more.
